Why crash protection comes first for an older driver
CDC reports that drivers 70 and older have a higher death rate per crash than middle-aged drivers, mainly because older bodies are more vulnerable to injury. That is why the table above starts with crashworthiness rather than features: a cautious driver still needs the car to protect them in the crash someone else causes. The four bars are the ones the site can verify per model. Seat height, door opening and control layout are not in any data set, so the checklist below has to be done in person.
Crash-avoidance features, in the order the evidence supports
- Automatic emergency braking. The highest priority; IIHS found large reductions in rear-end crashes for systems that brake automatically. Compare the exact model's IIHS front crash prevention result, since having AEB and having a strong AEB system are not the same thing.
- Good-rated headlights. Night vision declines with age. Check the rating for the trim you are buying; on many models the Good rating applies only to some trims.
- Blind-spot warning. Useful when neck flexibility makes shoulder checks harder; IIHS found a 14% reduction in lane-change crashes. It supplements a mirror check rather than replacing one.
- Rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic braking. Help when reversing out of a space with limited side visibility; a camera, sensors and rear braking together cut backing crashes far more than a camera alone.
- Lane-departure prevention. Test the alert. A harsh beep the driver switches off is worth less than a vibration or adjustable warning that stays on.
- Partial automation. Last. Lane centering plus adaptive cruise may reduce workload but needs constant supervision and strong driver-monitoring safeguards.
The fit, visibility and controls checklist
Fit
- At least 10 inches between the breastbone and the steering-wheel airbag while still reaching the pedals comfortably (NHTSA).
- Seat with fore-aft, height and cushion adjustment; tilt-and-telescoping wheel; memory seats if the car is shared.
- Entry and exit without a big step up or drop down, doors that open wide enough for the driver and any mobility aid, grab handles where a hand naturally goes.
- A belt that crosses the middle of the shoulder and chest, not the neck.
Visibility
- Can the driver see the road close ahead and judge the car's corners? Do the roof pillars hide pedestrians or crossing traffic?
- Large, easy-to-adjust mirrors and a rear window that is useful without the camera.
- No dashboard reflections in the windshield at night; an auto-dimming rearview mirror reduces glare.
- Keep glass, mirrors and headlights clean and have headlight aim checked (NHTSA).
Controls
On the test drive, have the intended driver set the temperature and fan, turn on defogging and hazard lights, adjust the mirrors and dashboard brightness, use the wipers and lights, silence an alert, shift into reverse and read the camera, read the speedometer in sun and shade, find the parking brake, and cancel cruise control without looking down. Physical buttons with large labels and consistent menus beat a big touchscreen. The right interface is the one the driver can operate accurately under modest pressure.
Health, medications and when to get an evaluation
Technology cannot compensate for every change in vision, cognition or reaction time. CDC advises regular eye exams and a medication review with a doctor or pharmacist. New scrapes, missed signs, confusion on familiar roads or trouble moving between the pedals justify a professional driving evaluation. A certified driver rehabilitation specialist can assess fitness to drive and recommend adaptive equipment; NHTSA recommends consulting one before buying or modifying a vehicle.
