Trailer Underride Safety: What the Toughguard Award Covers

The manufacturer’s name is only the start. Trailer type, production date and the installed rear guard determine whether an award applies.

On September 15, 2026, IIHS announced Fruehauf’s first Toughguard award. It covers 53-foot dry vans with aluminum or composite walls built after September 30, 2026. The qualifying production window has not begun as of this article’s September 16 check. MGA Research conducted the tests that IIHS reviewed. Read the IIHS announcement.

For a fleet buyer, that date is the useful detail. An order, delivery date or familiar badge cannot establish when a particular trailer was built. Ask for the trailer’s identification and the specification of its installed guard before describing that unit as award-qualified.

Why a rear guard matters to people in cars

A trailer’s high rear structure can pass above a car’s front crash structure. The car can travel underneath, allowing the trailer to intrude into the occupant compartment. A strong rear guard is intended to intercept the car before that happens. A qualification checklist for all 10 manufacturers

Our comparison reorganizes IIHS’s published eligibility conditions into trailer type, production window and equipment requirements. 6 manufacturers have an equipment-dependent qualification path. An optional-guard listing does not establish that a retrofit is available, compatible or economical for a particular trailer.

What the award tests—and what it leaves open

The original program used a midsize car at 35 mph against a stationary trailer in full-width, 50% and 30% overlap crashes. The smaller overlap loads the guard near its edge. Today, IIHS says separate full-width and 50% tests are no longer needed under the federal requirements; the 30% condition may be assessed with a quasi-static force test. Read Toughguard as evidence about rear underride protection under the program’s conditions. It is not a side-guard award, a guarantee at every speed or angle, or a substitute for checking the condition of the guard on the trailer in front of you. Four questions to ask before buying or documenting a trailer

  1. Which unit? Record the VIN or serial number, manufacturer, trailer family and build month. Match the trailer type and date to the table.
  2. Which guard? Where an option is required, obtain written confirmation of the guard identification and eligibility for that exact trailer.
  3. What has changed? Ask about collision damage, repairs and guard replacement. An original build specification does not describe every later repair.
  4. What is documented? Keep the manufacturer’s confirmation with the purchase record. If the answer remains uncertain, record it as unverified rather than inferring qualification from appearance.

This is a purchasing and reporting checklist, not an engineering inspection procedure. The manufacturer’s instructions and a qualified repair facility are the appropriate sources for inspection and repair decisions.

Original analysis: recorded underride and missing information

We linked the final 2020–2024 FARS collision-event records to vehicle and person records. The narrow group below contains crashes with exactly two in-transport vehicles: a passenger vehicle striking the rear of a truck tractor coded as pulling a semitrailer. Matching requires an actual collision event between the two vehicles, with passenger-vehicle front clock positions 11/12/1 and truck rear positions 5/6/7.

Missing coding materially limits interpretation. In 2024, 104 of 282 passenger vehicles in this group had unreported or unknown underride status. The field changed in 2021, introducing separate not-reported and not-applicable values. This table cannot establish a time trend in actual underride frequency. The occupant-death column covers the entire selected collision group, not only confirmed underride.

Vehicle-level underride can refer to any collision in the crash. Even this strict pairing does not identify an installed guard, the trailer contact structure, guard failure or causation for each death. Side impacts, parked trailers, multi-vehicle crashes and ambiguous impact positions are excluded. Consequently, these counts are neither all U.S. underride deaths nor an award-effectiveness estimate.

Manufacturer research worth doing next

The most useful follow-up is an availability and verification study: ask each manufacturer for guard part numbers, compatible trailer families, retrofit availability, installed-cost ranges and documentation an owner can obtain. Publish the response date, unanswered questions and whether a price includes installation. A second project could examine how consistently fatal-crash records identify underride. GAO’s 2019 review documented limitations in recording these crashes. That finding makes a missing-data audit valuable, but it is not a current national fatality estimate. GAO’s underride report.

The completed coding audit above is a starting point for a broader study. State and lighting comparisons would require further review of reporting differences; a missing-data pattern alone cannot establish crash risk.

That analysis could describe the fatal-crash record. It could not establish which guard was fitted, how much each trailer was driven, or how many deaths a particular manufacturer’s design prevented. Fruehauf’s future production cutoff makes a present-day before-and-after effectiveness claim especially inappropriate.
