198 current models appear in our IIHS dataset, and the highest-rated is the 2027 Tesla Model Y at 98.6/100 with an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. 53 current models earned a Top Safety Pick+ and 17 earned a Top Safety Pick. 136 models have a complete IIHS record and are ranked; 62 are still awaiting at least one test.

IIHS ratings describe performance in specific crash and crash-prevention tests. Our score combines those results with class-level fatality data; NHTSA stars come from a separate federal testing program.

NHTSA is the federal agency whose 5-Star Safety Ratings come from different frontal, side, and rollover tests. The score combines IIHS results with class-level driver fatality data.
