Truck Driver Safety: Crash Tests, Fatality Data and Practical Choices

A truck’s size does not remove the risk to its driver. Separate crash avoidance, cab protection and protection for other road users.

What the U.S. data says

IIHS reports 920 large-truck occupant deaths in 2024, within 5,340 deaths among all people in crashes involving large trucks. Of the truck-occupant deaths, 47% involved rollover and 58% occurred in single-vehicle crashes. These groups can overlap.

The published mileage-adjusted figure is 0.28 large-truck occupant deaths per 100 million truck miles. It combines drivers and passengers across a broad truck category, not just long-haul semis. A fatal-crash involvement rate answers a different question: a truck can be involved in a fatal crash even when everyone inside the truck survives. Keep that distinction when interpreting company safety claims.

Are trucks crash-tested?

IIHS began evaluating cargo vans and Class 3 pickups in June 2026. Its first assessment checks standard driver airbags, belt pretensioners and force limiters, plus a track-tested belt reminder. It does not crash-test the effectiveness of those components. This provides useful equipment evidence for the evaluated work vehicles, but not a crashworthiness ranking of tractor cabs or completed RV conversions. IIHS commercial-vehicle evaluation launch.

Tests exist, but a “safety rating” need not describe cab protection. Euro NCAP’s current truck program assesses safe driving, crash avoidance and post-crash functions. It says it does not presently evaluate passive crash protection; restraint assessments are planned for 2028 and work toward a whole-vehicle crash test targets 2031. Those are future plans, not current test results.

Euro NCAP also says buyers should match the optional equipment fitted to the tested vehicle. European results are not automatically transferable to a U.S. truck with a similar brand name. Euro NCAP truck testing and scope.

For a purchase, ask for the exact cab and model-year test report: loading, impact direction, survival space, dummy injury measurements, restraint configuration and who conducted the test. A cab-strength demonstration, regulatory compliance statement and independent occupant-injury comparison are different kinds of evidence. We have not verified a comparable consumer crashworthiness ranking across U.S. tractor models.

Actions a driver or fleet can take

  1. Wear the seat belt on every trip. Staying restrained matters during a rollover as well as an impact.
  2. Manage speed and following space. Leave room to stop and slow before curves, ramps and adverse conditions.
  3. Protect sleep and attention. Stop safely when fatigued; avoid driving while ill or affected by sedating medication. Plan rest and parking into the route.
  4. Check brakes, tires and load security. Complete pre-trip checks; shifting cargo can undermine stability.
  5. Plan for visibility and vehicle dimensions. Monitor blind spots and use routes suitable for the truck’s height, weight and turning needs.

These priorities follow FMCSA’s driver guidance. They complement vehicle design; neither equipment nor skill makes every crash avoidable.

Crash avoidance has measurable benefits

A 2020 IIHS study found automatic emergency braking associated with 41% fewer front-to-rear crashes in the studied large trucks; forward-collision warning was associated with 44% fewer. These are results for that crash type and study population, not reductions in all deaths. They support evaluating AEB when choosing equipment, while learning the particular system’s limits. The table counts drivers and passengers killed in in-transport vehicles. These categories describe body construction, not necessarily professional truckers: heavy pickups, step vans and unknown truck types are included separately. They are not the same selection as IIHS’s aggregate above. Counts must not be used to rank risk without matching fleet or mileage data.

The most useful next comparison would document safety equipment and cab-test evidence for exact U.S. configurations, alongside routes, mileage and fleet use. Raw deaths by manufacturer alone would reward lower exposure and could mislead the people relying on the ranking.
