Center bore
The hole in the middle of the wheel must be at least as large as the hub it slides over. Factory wheels match exactly, so the hub carries the wheel’s weight. An aftermarket wheel with a larger bore needs a hub-centric ring to fill the gap; without one the lug nuts carry the load and the wheel can vibrate. A smaller bore does not fit.
The math, shown
Outer edge movement = (new width − old width) × 25.4 ÷ 2 − (new offset − old offset). Inner edge movement = (new width − old width) × 25.4 ÷ 2 + (new offset − old offset). Backspacing = (width + 1) ÷ 2 + offset ÷ 25.4. Bolt circle = stud spacing ÷ sin(180° ÷ lug count).
Questions people ask
What is wheel offset?
The distance in millimetres from the wheel’s mounting face to its centreline. Positive offset puts the mounting face toward the outside of the wheel, so the wheel tucks in; most front-drive and modern all-wheel-drive cars use +35 to +50 mm. Lower offset pushes the wheel outward.
What is the difference between offset and backspacing?
They describe the same thing from different ends. Offset measures from the centreline; backspacing measures from the inner lip of the wheel to the mounting face, in inches. This page converts between them because U.S. truck wheels are often sold by backspacing and car wheels by offset.
Can I use a wheel with a bigger center bore?
Yes, with a hub-centric ring that fills the gap between the hub and the wheel. Rings are cheap and come in plastic or aluminium. A wheel with a smaller bore than your hub will not go on.
