About ANCAP
The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has been the independent voice for vehicle safety in Australia and New Zealand since 1992. ANCAP closely aligns its testing with Euro NCAP protocols, often using the same test data, making their results directly comparable.
ANCAP places particular emphasis on active safety features β the driver assistance systems that help prevent crashes in the first place. Their ratings are widely used by consumers, fleet buyers, and government agencies across Australasia.
Why ANCAP matters for US buyers: Australia drives on the left, but many car models are identical to US versions. ANCAP often tests vehicles shortly after launch β sometimes before IIHS does β providing early crash performance data for shared-platform models.

Spotlight: Mazda MX-5 Miata
The Mazda MX-5 has never been crash-tested by IIHS in the US. But ANCAP awarded it 5 stars in 2016 β achieving the highest pedestrian safety score ANCAP had ever seen at the time, thanks to its innovative pop-up bonnet that creates clearance in a pedestrian impact.
Euro NCAP gave it 4 stars (primarily due to lacking AEB at the time), but scored it 84% on adult protection and 93% on pedestrian protection. The body structure is identical to the US model.
This is exactly why international crash test data matters β without ANCAP and Euro NCAP, MX-5 buyers in the US would have zero crash performance data to evaluate.
