What the award requires, and why it is shown but not weighted

To earn Top Safety Pick, a vehicle needs Good ratings in the small overlap front test and the updated side test, an Acceptable or Good rating in the updated moderate overlap front test, Acceptable or Good headlights on every trim, and an Acceptable or Good pedestrian front crash prevention result. Top Safety Pick+ raises the moderate overlap requirement to Good, which in practice means the vehicle protects a rear-seat passenger as well as the driver.

Those same tests already make up 80% of our score (55% primary tests plus 25% occupant-protection details), so scoring the award on top would double-count the same evidence. Instead, the one award input the tests do not cover, the pedestrian front crash prevention result, is scored directly at 10%, and the remaining 10% is class context. Top Safety Pick+ adds a Good rating in the updated moderate overlap front test, which measures rear-seat passenger protection; Top Safety Pick only requires Acceptable in that test.
